Did you know there is very little to none in the way of legislation around who can call themselves a building inspector in South Australia? Unfortunately this means that building inspection companies large and small operating around Adelaide are offering inspection services from people that have very little or even no experience in construction. The good news is that you are not stuck with blind faith that your building inspector knows what they are talking about, while not everyone calling themselves a building inspector needs to know what they talking about to take your job anyone that holds a Builders Licence does. You should make sure that anyone you are hiring to inspect the construction of your next potential home is a licensed builder, any building inspector you are hiring should be licensed to build whatever they are inspecting.
While the person in the photo might look like a unkept dirty.. well trades person at-least by checking their builders licence you know that your building inspector knows what they are talking about when they come to look at your job rather than someone that has decided to do it for a bit of extra cash on the side.
When you are engaging a building inspector there are a couple of things you will be wanting to make sure of
1 - Your building inspector is licensed to build whatever you need inspected(if they don't know how to build it they wont know how what might be wrong with it)
You can look up any builder by putting their name or builders license into the public license register (https://secure.cbs.sa.gov.au/OccLicPubReg/LicenceDetails.php?LicClassCode=BLD&LicNum=266111)
2 - You know exactly what you are getting in your inspection. There are several types of building inspections and it is important to know what you are getting. Some things may need specific types of inspections and you might even need multiple inspectors depending on what you are after.
Never hesitate to ask for someones builders licence it will only be a problem if they don't have one.
